As we hoped, the mining pool’s adjustment to its hashrate distribution strategy was sufficient to bring the network back to a stable state. With this change, the trigger that caused the spike can no longer reproduce under current conditions. The penalty mechanism will be adjusted in a future upgrade to avoid excessive impact in edge cases. While this behavior caused a temporary performance degradation, it cannot be weaponized efficiently. During the incident: - Network difficulty increased, degrading performance - Block times peaked at ~2.5 minutes - Transactions still went through, just more slowly - Miners were the most impacted by the increased difficulty - The network remained secure and operational throughout We’re continuing to monitor the chain, but everything looks stable. 🙏 A huge thank you to all the mining pools and ecosystem participants who made themselves available, in the middle of the night or during the weekend, and stood ready to deploy quickly if needed. Urgent Network Announcement Dear Alephium community, Earlier today, the network began experiencing significantly increased block times due to a sudden spike in difficulty. After investigation, we identified the root cause: a sharp drop in hashrate combined with a specific aspect of our difficulty adjustment algorithm. We are actively working on a solution and will publish a detailed post-mortem once the issue is fully resolved. ⚠️ This will require an urgent network upgrade to restore normal chain operation. All node operators must prepare to update their infrastructure accordingly. Next Steps: 1. DAA Change Development The update is currently under development and testing. It will be released with a clearly defined activation timestamp, coordinated with mining pools. 2.
